Almost 10 Months Now

Almost 10 Months Now

Posted by bigwave916 on Jul 12, 2018 5:48 pm

Hello,

I am coming up on 10 months since I was knocked flat by a cyst on my spine and infection through out the spinal cord. (Tranverse Myelitis)  I am wheelchair/bed bound and frustrated with lack of progress. To top it off, I fell out of my chair and broke both hips.  I required bi-lateral surgery and during surgery I flat-lined. It made me rethink that "living will/do not resuscitate" thing they always ask about. I am depressed some days, frustrated most other days. Before my paralysis I rode motorcycles, drove my hot rod, played golf, and worked for the minor league AAA National Champion Durham Bulls and felt like I had the world by the ass.

Regards,
Dave

Glad I didn't need the Suicide Hotline!

Hi Dave

So sorry to hear about your situation.

It is always so difficult to even start to come to terms with the new normal.  My husband had a bad motor vehicle accident and is now a C5 incomplete.  He is chair bound, and some days don't tolerate the chair well, so is in bed a fair amount too.  Some days are better than others, but he copes by chatting to all sorts of new friends.  I think that isolation is the most difficult thing.

Good luck.

Hello,

I just now noticed your reply.  Thanks for responding.  I had hoped this site would be more active, but I find that I rarely log on.

I'm now more than a year into my paralysis and disappointed with my "progress".  I had another set back, breaking my tibia, fibula, and the femur on my right leg.  After the hip fractures in June, then this accident, I'm a little fearful of getting out of bed.  I've got a cast on my lower leg and metal bars attached to rods that go through my leg above the knee.  Makes it tough to wear long trousers.

I've taken up a new hobby that gives me something to look forward to, but it's not so good for my increasing body weight.  I bought a new smoker grill and my new motto is "Who says you can't cook sitting down" :)

Drs. told me that we wouldn't know extent of my recovery until 2 years.  If I'm halfway there, I better start making progress or I'm looking forward to the rest of my life in bed and wheelchair.

Regards,
Dave
