What Are Good Resources to Find Backup Home Care Nurses for Spinal Cord Injuries?

I need to find a new backup nurse for my spinal cord injury care.

Anyone who has had a spinal cord injury knows this is an ongoing process.

I was wondering if everyone could submit their best sources or resources for finding good spinal cord injury backup care nurses.

Secondly, normally I was satisfied with training new nurses aids about spinal cord injury care.

However, if you have good sources or ideas of where good "pools" of trained spinal cord injury home care nurses can be found, that would be good.

Welcome here!

My name is Donna. I am an Information Specialist here at the Paralysis Resource Center.

We have information on cargiving and on interviewing PCAs.

You pose an excellent question and you're right -- it is an ongoing issue for people
with spinal cord injuries.

I can email you the information and see if I can find local resources for you.

Please call or contact me: (800) 539-7309 x 5911 or dlowich@ChristopherReeve.org .

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Donna

Hello,

My name is Bill Cawley and I am one of Donna's colleague.  I wanted to make you aware of another Reeve Foundationn resouce that may be of assistance.  I manage our national peer mentoring program, the Peer & Family Support Program.  We have certified mentors all over the country and I am sure some of them have dealt with similar home care issues.  If you wanted to speak to a peer mentor in a similar situation or have in the past please just let me know.  You can email  me at peer@christopherreve.org  but I will also check back here if you want to leave me a message.

In the mean time I will share your post in our private FB group and ask for any suggestion they might have.

Thanks and good luck,
Bill

Afternoon,

Hope all is well.  Several peer  mentors responded to my re-post of your post.  I am going to share some of the posts.  I think there are questions you want to think about.  I would be happy to connect you with any of our peer mentors.

Also where are you needing care? What type of help are you looking for? Bathing/dressing? Household chores/shopping? Bladder/bowel care? Driving you doctor appt/shopping?

Do you need trained "nurses" or will trained "aides" work? Nurses are much more expensive in providing care. An aide would be trained and would cost much less. Be careful as to the wording of your request.

Someone also suggested checking out care.com

Pls. let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks and take care,
Bill
