antispasm medications

antispasm medications

Posted by C on May 5, 2017 4:16 pm

My brother is an incomplete quadrapegic.  He has been hurt for almost 18 years.  He is taking (Xanaflex) tizanidine for spasms but is not working as well as it used to.  He has tried valium to extend the medication but it only extends a little.  Anny suggestions or new medication that he can try to help with the spasticity?

Hello C,
My name is Bill Cawley, I am the Program Manager, for the Reeve Foundation's national peer mentoring program (The Peer & Family Support program).

I recently startling taking 30 mg of Bacolfen at night which has helped my spasms at night.  I never used any kind of anti-spasms medicine until about a year ago.  I will also post your question on our peer mentor's private FB  page to see if they have an suggestions.
I also wanted to let you know that we have over 250 certified mentors across the country that work with people living with paralysis as well as those that care for them.  They can provide answer to questions like spasms as well as all the other questions and issues that the people in our community face everyday because they have been where you and your brother are right now.

If you or your brother want to learn more about the mentor program or talk to a mentor please email me at

I will post any suggestions from our mentor regarding your spasm question in the next day or two.

Thanks for reaching out.  Thanks and take care,

Please make sure you check with your physician before changing youur current medication or taking new medication

Thank you for responding.  Baclofen doesn't work for him.  Neither does mirapex.  He was just put on clonazepam with the zanaflex.  Hopefully that will help.  I might be interested in the mentor program but I know my brother will not be.

Thanks again for the info.

Hi C,
Thanks for getting back to me.  I ma glad to hear he is trying a new medication- please let me know how it works.

I did have a couple of peer mentors respond to my post regarding your brother's spasms.  One suggested
Gabapentin (I have never heard of this medication).  Another said she know some mentors have used medical marijuana to control spasms ( I have never tried that or know anyone that has used for spasms).  I will let you know if I get any other suggestions.

Please let me know if you want to speak to a mentor or want to learn more about the program.  We have a lot family members talk to our family member mentors and to a person they have found the support and resources very helpful. You can email me at if you are interested in the mentor program.

Before you make any changes to your medication please check with your physician

Thanks and good luck,
