My son was injured in a hockey game.  His feet  were taken out from under him and he went head first in to the boards.  Just 8 months from injury on the 6th.  We have not given up hope however, are dealing with his condition as of today.  He is going to go to college this fall, plays sled hockey and has a great attitude.
We are struggling now with funds for college.   Seems most grants or scholarships had ended prior to us knowing that he would be in a chair yet.  Even thought Drs will not give a prognosis we were told that his chances of walking were good.   I am happy to find this blog as there seems to be alot of information and ideas out there.
    Thanks for listening. :)

Sorry top hear about your son's accident and injury. I am 8 months post from a T-12 dislocation. I hope that he is getting some return and that he is working it as hard as he can. You never know how much he will get back but anything will be helpful in the long run. So don't let up.
If you apply for your FASMA in January they will apply any aid for which you are eligible to his first semester and you will receive a rebate check from the school in the spring.
Another good source of information from others who have been through what you facing is the Rutger's University Care Forum. I highly recommend this site.
    Good luck!

Look into Swim with Mike. This foundation provides scholarships for injured student athletes. It is a wonderful organization and helped my son graduate from college. Google, Swim with Mike. They  are located in California.

I am sorry that you guys are having to deal with this. There are several sites that do still have funds available. Check out www.180medical.com/scholarships there are still some $1000 scholarships available there.

    Hi,

I am sorry to hear of your son's injury. It sounds as if he is staying active and involved; a positive attitude means so much!

As for scholarships (and for information for students with disabilities going on to college) you may want to visit the website for the Heath Resource Center out of George Washington University. They are a clearinghouse of information for post-secondary education for students with disabilities. Their website is located at:
    http://www.heath.gwu.edu

I have additional information on spinal cord injury for individuals who are newly injured. If  you would like to receive the information, includin/g information on clinical trials, support groups and home modifications, among other topics, please contact me.

My email addres is dlowich@christopherreeve.org and my phone number is (800) 539-7309 x7202.

I hope this is helpful to you and your son!

    Sincerely,
    Donna
