    By Anjali
    Hi,
My brother met with a road accident in 2010 and got spinal injury of level C5-C6 level.
He is only 25yrs and with a very strong will power.
Does any body know about the possible cure of this?
    We are in India(New Delhi).

    Thanks for the reply Asif.
We took our brother to Spinal Injury Center in Vasant Kunj just after accident and he was admitted there for about 6 months. We went to Dr. Geeta Shroff hospital also but my brother's condition was so critical and he needed intense care so we planned for stem cell therapy only after my brother's condition stabled.
Now his condition is stable by God's grace. So we are planning for the treatment.
Is stem cell only solution for this injury?
Have you also been cured by this stem cell therapy?
Because this treatment is very costly so want to know the success rate of this treatment.
Would definitely like to meet you with my brother. Please inform me when you come to Delhi.
Please contact on 9953480983 when you come to Delhi.
    Take care.

Hey I have done a stem cell surgery in Bangalore. Also have taken a booster injection from a hospital called BGS Global. Idiots !!!! Haha Actually thats wat I think :)) My family thinks otherwise.. That's why I wanted to meet Dr geeta shroff cos I have heard that her hit rate is pretty good.  Stem cell is still at its experimental stage but as of now that's d only progress for spine care. Plus my doctors said the earlier u do it the better it is M not sure if they jus gave me an excuse as there was no improvement in my case.  Also I forgot to tell u , please watch out for bed sores Keep turning him on both sides Does he have any sores ??? I wanted to go to spine care centre too !!!  Did it help ur brother ??? How long is it required to stay there ??? Temme more bout ur brother ??? Wat does he do in his spare times ??? Can he move his fingers ?? I can't !!!  I have also been to kerela for Ayurvedic treatment but it din help much... The tightness in my body reduced though.. :)) Do let me know more Might help me too !!! Keep him happy  Tc

Yeah stem cell therapy is in its initial stage.
My brother also gone through a surgery for bed sores in spinal injury center when he was admitted their. He was in ICU for around 1 month in Kailash hospital in Noida on ventilator and also  we were not aware of bed sores kind of things. Now we take care of these things properly.
Spinal injury center is a very good hospital but very costly too.
It has all the facilities for spinal injured patients like rehab center and a good enviroment too.You should go there and stay some time for around 3-4 months. You would learn techniques in rehab center for balancing your-self etc.
I met Dr. Geeta shroff when my brother's condition was not stable. His bed sore was in extreme bad condition and because of urine infection he had fever all time.Stem cells can't be injected when patient's condition is not stable. Here stable means no fever , no infection etc.So at that time our stay of 15days in Geeta shroff's hospital was of no use.
My experience with Geeta shroff was not good.Because she seems to me a competitor of spinal injury center and gets angry when you say something good about spinal injury hospital.

After two years my brothers condition is a bit improved. We have a physiotherapist who visits   4 times in a week.
We didn't tried anything else than these for his treatment.
I would suggest you to go for some utensils made for your ease like spoon with a wide handle, glass with handle.I bought some such utensils for my bro and using these he is able to eat dal-chawal or corn-flakes etc without any help.
Yes his fingers are not moving but there is a straightning strip which is attached to his fingers and then he can type on laptop keyboard and do chatting :P.
I am planning to buy an elictric wheel chair for him.Its a bit costly but anything for my sweet bro..
Doctors in spinal says that there is no proper cure found till now for this injury. But I want to try stem cell once.Lets see.
I also tried to contact a hospital in China. But they are charging 18,000 USD around 9-10 lakhs Rs.So this is out of my budget. They are offering 1 month stay in china and stem cell + accupuncture treatment.
    There contact info is :

Interventional Hospital of Shandong Red Cross Society

    Hello:
I thought it important to remind folks of the research and safety studies that have been done regarding stem cell research and Human trials overseas. Please follow the link to use the patient guide to help you evaluate if a treatment is viable.

This policy statement was written by our Executive Vice President of Research in 2009:

Position statement on unproven cellular therapies for spinal cord injury
In the (2009) issue of the journal Spinal Cord, an international panel of scientists and clinicians stake a position on "the sale of unproven cellular therapies for spinal cord injury." This position statement is must reading for all of us in this field because it lays out a series of rational and cogent arguments (some of which you may not have ever thought about) for not participating in unproven experimental treatments.

However, be aware that the last sentence in the statement is incorrect! Clearly it should read that the statement was endorsed by member organizations of the International Campaign for Cures of Spinal Cord Injury Paralysis (ICCP) and NOT the Institute for Certification of Computing Professionals.

You may also want to revisit the consumer version of the ICCP panel's guidelines for human clinical trials in spinal cord injury, published several years ago in Spinal Cord.

Wow... Read the article n it's kinda scary... Was looking forward to another stem cell but will be a bit carefully.. The thing in India is tat peopl are really emotional n the doctors take advantage of tat.. After the surgery they wanna send u home ASAP ... Plus only 2/3 check ups semi annually is all they cover.. They also take an agreement from you saying tat you know stem cell is @ an experimental stage n they're not responsible... I think there's a form or something ...  @ Anjali : it's soo good to hear that ur brother is progressing... Although slow but steady.. Bout the stem cell .. China is too expensive ... Plus I guess they would do anything different... In Bangalore it costs between 3/5 lacs.. Post surgery check ups included...  I too started slow wit my physio n now I feel it's time to fasten the process... That's y I was lookin at dr shroff n spine care centre... Can u please give me a small brief of wat happens in a day in spine care centre...  How expensive is it ??? N also max how many peopl can accompany me ??? Ur of grt help thanks :)) Is ur brother on FB ??? Tell him to add me... Asif Ali Sayani  The good looking guy in the suit is me... Lol  Old pic !!! Only if he wants to.. Tc

Currently there is no cure for spinal cord injury. No matter what anyone says. If the research defending stem cells were solid they would submit it for peer review. Alway be leary of any study that show 90-100% efficacy rates. This is highly unlikely.
Currently the cure is your body recovers from shock and if you are lucky you have function preserved somewhere, even if it is undetectable at first. Move as much as you can as often as you can and hope that your body will remember what it is upposed to do.
My opinion is the nerve regenerative efforts with electrical stim show the most promise. Good luck. Caveat Emptor!

I have done FES. It is designed to halt atrophe and help build muscle back that you may have lost as function returns. They also feel that it may help nerves remember how to work, but that is up for debate. Currently there really isn't anything that is available to humans in the US. Everything is either in the trial stage or earlier. Check out Care Forum at Rutger's University. They have a thread on the Miami Project and ChinaSCInet. These are both using stem cells in their trials but are not really ready for puiblic. This is looooong way off and most trials either are looking for acute patients or extremely chronic patients. I think that this may prove fruitful but it will be sometime before any of this has been through process of study that will lead to widespread availability.
