    40 years post injury
    By Linda
Hi, I'm Linda and I had a T-12 incomplete injury in a car accident when I was 15. I have been able to walk with assistive devices all these years with chronic pain, bowel/bladder problems, and many health issues requiring more than 30 surgeries. I wanted to write because I have recently begun to get feeling and movement in my lower leg where I had flaccid paralysis. The doctor and orthotist are amazed (not nearly as much as me!). Instead of continuing to get weaker as I had been over the past twenty-five years, I am now looking at getting a new kind of brace that will allow me to use the new movement in my ankle to push-off. Many people are asking me how I've done this, and the best way to describe it is to continue to work any muscle flicker that you have. At first, I could feel the muscle flicker but no one else could. Then, my husband could feel it, but you couldn't see it. Then you could see it, but it didn't actually move anything. Then, almost imperceptible movements happened until now ... It's moving!

I'm t-12 too and the more I work my abdomen, the more control I'm getting over my pelvis. Nothing as far south as an ankle, but after 15 years, I can flex my hips, something I couldn't do for years. Gotta chalk it up to the old hand cycle!

That!s fantastic! I think you just have to keep building those muscles and nerve connections. Are the doctors surprised that your strength is increasing? I go tomorrow for the new braces. I guess I'll see if I can actually use them. Cross your fingers!

I know, I don't go unless it's an emergency or need to get a script, but it feels weird that this is probably the most significant positive thing that's happened to me since the accident, and there is no one who even understands how important it is. Guess that's why I wrote on here.
