    Very fresh injury
    By Tisa
During the early morning hours of January 29, 2012 my little brother became the victim of a tragic crime. On the way home from a party with some highschool friends and fellow football teammates, someone attempted to take the life of my brother by shooting at the car he was driving. He was hit by 4 bullets with one of them causing a spinal injury which is what brought us to this site. We can never understand why someone tried to steal the joy from a 17 year old high school junior looking forward to his senior year of school and possibly earning a scholarship to play football for college but we do know that God spared his life for a reason. He is an athlete by heart so he has a lot of fight in him and being a defensive lineman, he is used to taking some heavy hits. We are a close knit family and we have a love for one another that is never ending. We have only grown closer through this unfortunate incident. His recovery has already been in the fast lane, only spending 9 hrs in ICU and 4 days in the hospital before moving to Rehab. He has an incomplete T3/T4 spinal injury and he has complete upper body movement and feeling all the way down to his toes but no movement from the waist down. He is currently wearing a CTO brace to minimize the movement of his neck which the doctor will see him again after 3 months to see if it can be removed. I am looking for any words of wisdom or encouragement, and any advice to help us through this journey. We know the road ahead is a very long one and we are ready for it. I know alot about the brain and spinal cord as I have a B.S. in Neuroscience and was in the process of applying to grad school to become a researcher for traumatic brain injuries before this happened. I am grateful for sites such as these and if anyone has any advice, medical or not, I gladly welcome it.

Hey Tisa - I was also quite lucky when I had my accident as my brother is one of the best spinal cord docs in the biz. Having people in the immediate circle who really know what's going on medically is such a huge releif to everyone involved. And that means EVERYONE your brother knows. I'm sure you're about to get to know a lot more about SCI than you ever wanted to learn, but it's people like you who keep us all going.

Now here's the good news: Your brother probably just won that full scholarship. You need to contact the people at Swim with Mike. 'Mike' was a swimmer for USC back in the 70's when he had his accident. The team did a swimathon for him back then and just continued hosting them. Now they've raised millions of dollars and they spend it on putting SCI athletes through college.  Contact them through http://www.swimwithmike.org. They put me through school and are actively looking for people like your brother to spend their money on! Go for it - all it takes is a couple of recommendations from H.S. teachers and coaches and he'll be rolling around a college campus in no time.

    Good Luck!!

    Hi
My husband, a competitive triathlete,  was in a bicycling accident on Sept 3 2011 and was originally diagnosed as an ASIA A complete C3-4 quadraplegic. He can now wheel himself in a manual chair and can walk with a walker for very short distances. As soon as he came out of the medically induced coma 7 days after the accident we encouraged him to think about moving his body. I did small range of motion with his hands and arms and had him think about making that movement. I dont know if any of that has any bearing on how much movement he has regained but I am sure it did not hurt.
We have also found our family growing closer since his accident. For all the losses you experience after SCI, you can find suprising gains.

That's the best attitude to take Nahalie! See if he's up for quad rugby or skiing. They can get almost ANYBODY up on the hill these days!

    Good luck!

Hi-I am a T 11  T 12 incomplete. Your brother  sounds amazing, as do you. Perhaps one of the most important things I've learned in the past 2 years, is to learn to ask for help. Currently I am seeing a psychologist again. It's very important to look at all aspects of life, not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual well being. My very best to you all.

Asking for help is a beg step. For some idiotic reason I thought I could tough it out and just get through it, but I was repressing so much crap that it started to affect me physically. I actually broke out in hives once when I went to my old job, and I also found I was breaking down in tears for the dumbest reasons. I went to a shrink for about two months and after airing all my frustrations, disapointments, fears, etc. I felt WAY much better. Therapy rocks!

dear tisa, i'm a c6-7 incomplete sci.  the dr.s said i would never move anything below my neck, but today i have arms, some legs, hips and abs, i credit it to, devine intervention and a lot of hard work.  if he is incomplete there is no telling what he'll get back.  keep a positive attitude at all times and stay away from the if only's.  keep busy at all times, and exercise, exercise, exercise, i do between 3-5 hours a day.  join a gym if possible, i go to the gym 3 times a week and workout at home too.  i'll say a prayer for you and your little brother.  God bless!
