    Overcoming. (My Story)
    By KennethC
I am a 23 Year old male who at the age of 14 suffered a complete C4 spinal burst injury.  I do not remember what happened, so this is going off of friends / family / doctor notes as to the specifics.  Apparently I was playing with my friend and pushed into the shallow end of a pool, hit my head on the bottom and shattered my C4 Vertabrae completely, I was hospitalized and my diagnosis was not great.  I was told by ever specialist I saw I would never do anything for myself more or less.  I spent my days in the hospital for about eight or nine months I believe, I never once believed I would stay that way.  I was an athlete that played ever sport possible - In fact some of my old school mates are now in the NFL - the same people I played football with growing up.

Anyways, I digress.  I met a young man named James, about two or three years older, I do not remember now - but he had the same exact injury as I did apart from how it occurred.  He was on a trachea and could do less then I, I lucked out and only needed oxygen no trache.  He spoke to me daily on how I had to retrain my brain, try to get better and after about four months of laying in bed I managed to move my left leg very slightly.  Since then I had a new vigor and reason to try.  Sadly to say before I left the hospital my inspiration and friend James passed away due to complications, I can no longer remember the specifics but his words never left me.

Over the years with a lot of hard work I was able to learn to walk again, I still - to this day do not walk normally, I have severe weakness on my right side, my right hand does not work - nor does my tricep or hamstring, but I manage to get by.  So, I suppose if one doesn't give up, anything is possible.  I still suffer from severe pain and weakness but more less I have managed to get better; I am not 'normal' but I am at least no longer trapped in a chair.  So, Don't give up! Hang in there, even something minor can turn out great, trust me.

Here, I am new but here is an Image of me while I was still in the hospital:

That was after many months of treatment, though today I am no longer in a chair, I do not have full range of motion but I am able to walk.

For a comparison on how far I have gone here is an image about six months old:

There is a lot of hard work ahead for those just going through this, I still deal with hardships like a lot of people.  Though there is hope! I'd be happy to get to know anyone here or answer any questions.

Nice to see determination and hard work rewarded. It seems the nature of the beast that the triceps and hamstrings take the longest to recover, for those of us fortunate enough to get to that stage. I've often found frustration in the "almost" parts of recovery, when a goal is so close that it seems avaiable just around the corner, but it takes longer than you would think to arrive, if at all. No use in giving up.

    Hi Sharon and Jay,

Welcome here! I am an information specialist at the PRC and also have a spinal cord injury at C4,5,6 since Dec. 1985. I walk short distances with walker and use wheelchair for longer distances. Doctors told me early on that I would not be able to do so many things. I work, raised my son and did many of things I was told I could not do anymore.

I can send you some information on spinal cord injury for individuals who are newly injured, including support groups, home modifications, clinical trials.

Please call me at (800) 539-7309. My extension is 7202.

    Sincerely,
    Donna

Hello Sharon my name is Darren. I broke my neck 16 yrs ago and I can tell you that I praed for a miracle for years. When it didn't come I had to accept my reality and start using what I had left.
Sometimes we are put in situations like this becase we have something to learn from it. Life is not all roses and candy floss. There are struggles and hardships in everyday reality. The good news is, you don't have to surround yourself with it.
I have a wife and kids and a wonderful life. It's tough to look outside the box of paralysis but it is possible. I used to drive a van cause it was easy. Now I drive a truck because I can. I constantly challenge myself and have even takin 3 trips to another country by myself to see if I could. I did it, and was mugged once. But I never got hurt. I rented a car with hand controls in L.A. and got completely lost for 4 hrs. but I survived.
Allow your husband to take up challenges. It builds confidence and helps him to have a purpose in life without barriers.
Although it's been 16 yrs in a chair, I've never given up hope for a cure. In this age of science, it's not a matter of if, just a matter of when.

Good luck to you and your hubby.

hello sharon my name is mark I also had my accident in/on aug 20th of this year. So I can relate and understand of where your at. I spent four weeks in the hospital and just over three weeks in rehab. They told me in rehab that I was one of the fastest recoverys they had ever seen. I too go to out patient therepy twice per week . The best advice I can give you is to give your husband so room to challenge himself. Don't try to do to much for him but at the same time be their if he needs you. I try to challenge myself every day doing little things around the house i'm always trying some thing new . Our house has two storys and all the bedrooms are upstairs and unfortunatly I have been unable to get upstairs yet. That doesn't mean that I don't try that is going to be one of my big accomplishments. But start small and work your way up to the bigger challenges. If your husband is anything like me hes lost alot of his muscle and every thing is a challenge. Its also a challenge finacially as well and its hard but it gets easier as you go that I can tell you for sure. When things seem bad I just think back how far I have come and all the things I couldn't do weeks ago that I can now.I still have a long way to go as I'm sure your husband does as well but you just keep working on it and you will eventully make it. Nothing can change what has happened but you and your husband can change the way things are right now and how the future will be. Your probably going to lose some friends but don't worry because your going to meet some amazing people through this web site and other places and people you'll come into contact with. If theres anything that I can do to help you or your husband please just let us know. This web site is full of great people we all have our days but we are all in this together.

Hello Sharon, my name is Terry. I'm a T-8 complete as of Sept 20, 2006. I was a victim of crime( robbery attempt) I will never forget that night it changed my life forever I knew as soon as the bullet hit my body I was paralized. I prayed these exact words " thank you Jesus please save my life" and I heard His voice say to me " I will" I called and He answered I'm alive. I too prayed for healing, to walk again and I still believe He can heal me But if It dont happen I'm thankful for this moment God has given to me to type this email to you Jay and Shron. Keep your faith in our Creator He knows you and Loves you. Peace and Love to you and your family!

Hi sharon.im 41 and complete para from chest down resulted from a car acc, about 11 years ago.we say AMEN at the end of our prayers i heard somewhere that it means ON  YOUR WILL.. sharon keep praying but be friend with time as it is one of dimensions of our world working for us.. miracles usually used to come by prophets to prove human that God exists when human was a child..today the inner part of existence, doesn't expect us be like last generations. GOD is looking for friends not just beggers..it sometimes dosent answers cause knows our good better.. pray just as friend who is living in God..i after my prayers usually surrender (say nothing, clos my eyes, put myself in front of God and just wait what happens in my body)..you can try it too if you want to..plasure flows in and maybe miracle also happen sometime..IN GOD WE TRUST..i am praying for your husband and all members of this community..be well

Hi Sharon, My husband Michael is C5/6 incomplete.  He's been paralyzed since 1994, and we've been married since 2009.  I wasn't there for the injury and immediate rehab part of his journey, but I can relate in the day-to-day.  Keep your chin up!  Work as a team.  That's my advice.  You can check out our journey on our blog if you want: www.lovelikethislife.com, the SCI stuff is usually filed under "love hurts."

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. I have our first appointment with a spinal cord doctor since Jay's release from inpatient rehab in October on February 2. We are hoping she will have a new direction for us. OT/PT is great but we want more. Have any of you tried hydrotherapy or clincal trials and the like?

Jay: Hi, my name is Ed. I had a C5-C6 spine fusion done in July 1996 and due to a car accident in October 2010 I now have 2 herniated discs directly above and below the existing fusion. I am a strong supporter of hydrotherapy. I have a gym membership & ocasionally employ the whirlpool & swimming pool for relief from nerve & back pain and it really does help even if the effect is only temporary. I unfortunately do not get to the gym everyday so the relief is spaced out a few days at a time. It will help you sleep better and relax the flared nerves to the point the pain is drastically reduced after a normal 15-20 minute session and one can go back for more after a half hour or so. The swimming pool will also help even if the temperature is a bit cooler than a whirlpool & simply sitting stationary will help if only for 10 minutes. You need to give it a try and see if it will work for your benefit as it has for many. Good luck.
