    Being a walker
    By Walking Quad
    Joe:
At times I felt as if I was the ONLY walking quad/ SCI around and I felt pretty lost and isolated. Through a few online communities, I met other walking quads--all of us experiencing similar situations.
Life as a "walker" isn't always as easy as it may seem.  When Rob asked me to blog, I said only if I can call it, "Walking Quad".  I knew in my heart that there were others out there looking for others to talk to and having questions to ask.  To be candid, I have been amazed at just how many folks have commented.

Indeed, it helps to know that you are not alone.  I think the Reeve Community does a good job in helping folks connect.

Tell us your story on how you started walking, how you walk, and how long it took to walk.
    Thanks.

I totally agree. We all have our struggles, walking happens to be ours.

Being a walking quad is definitely not easy. I get asked ALL the time what happend to my leg or knee. No one seems to understand the extent a spinal cord injury can have on a person. Yes, I can walk kinda good with the help of my BioNess but having a hard time walking is only the tip of the iceburg.
I started playing quad rugby almost 2 years ago which has been a great outlet and mostly everyone welcomed me with open arms. But I do get called a "cheater" because I am able to stand up out of my rugby chair. Yet, they kick my #### on the court everytime because I don't push all day like mostly all of them. So, I think they are the cheaters!! LOL
Being a younger female under these circumstances sucks way more when it comes to footwear. It's so hard to find cute shoes that are functional! I got 3 pairs sitting right here in front of me that need to go back. I'll learn eventually...or so I hope!
I definitely go back and forth about whether pushing or walking is more productive and functoinal for me. I never learned how to manuever a chair because I was so set on getting out of it. I didn't want to waste therapy time pushing up curb cuts. Which would have actually been helpful last weekend as I was pushing around in the city...I kinda forgot to pop my front wheels and instead got thrown out onto the sidewalk. I found it to be quite comical although the girl in 3 inch heels and dress running to help me, as my friend stood 10 feet away from me telling me to get up, didn't seem to see the humor in it.
Not everyone may agree with my philosophy but I find being light-hearted with a sense of humor makes other people more comfortable with the situation. People are always so afraid of offending you that they don't act like themselves. So you take the elephant out of the room and crack a joke without going too far. Let them know your way good with who you are. They then will be as well.

One thing remains true for all of us...there's never a dull day!!
