    Riding Horses or Equine
    By MikeyBoxide
Does anyone else ride horses or has anyone else tried equine therapy yet. For me it's more then just therapy it's a hobby and has been all of my life, so it was one of the first things I wanted to try out when I was out of rehab. I still couldn't move anything from the waist down after my first session but I developed a crest mount since transfers for me are fairly easy. The first few sessions went by and the muscle tone in my legs started to come back. A few months went by and movement in my legs returned. My quads are pretty strong, but I am hardly able to walk still with nothing below the knees working. I suggest anyone who has trunk control to give it a try. For me I already broke my back once so falling off a horse is the least of my concerns. It's also been emotionally one of the best things for me to ride my horses as they're a great reflection of our own emotions. Thats what I do for fun and it's the closest thing to running I've encountered since not being able to do so in over two years.

Hi MikeyBoxide.......yes......riding is a wonderful thing to be able to do after a SCI . I remember the first time I got back on a horse........two years after my accident. It was intoxicating ! It was at a riding therapy place......they determined that my balance was good enough that I could rein the horse myself.......and we were supposed to trot over a small X.......my little horse broke into a lovely soft canter.....took it like a champ......much to the horror of the one who was supposed to be supervising me........and I laughed.....all the way through it. Horses are such spiritual beings........I think that anyone ,after a SCI who can.......should ride ! It helps with balance.....strength.....and most of all.........life. You'll feel alive again.By the way........that's how I became a paraplegic........a horse accident. I was training her not to rear up.....a most dangerous habit........I thought the lesson was over.....that I had " won "........she went up and sat down on me..........turns out.......she " won " . No .....I only learned later.....that she'd spent two years in a stall......had hurt her front hoof......and was probably in great pain.......she just didn't want anybody on her back. I should have asked about her background......I didn't......accidents happen. Horses are still.....magical.....and a wonderful answer to being mobile again. So yes Mikey.....I've tried equine therapy.........it works !

Hey Norma, sorry to hear you had your accident on a horse. I know now I have no fear of injuring myself on a horse and if I did I would just get right back on. I've been riding the same horse now for around 2 years just a 6 year old Percheron Paint Cross. He's quite a big boy I don't know how many hands to be exact. I owe alot of my recovery to working with him and even got featured on the news at one point. Though I would really like to compete at some point I just need the right resources. This is something I likely will continue to do for the rest of my life. I don't do much else for therapy a few rides a week is like a week in the gym. Besides underlying health conditions I'm in great physical shape and continue to stay that way despite being in a wheelchair. Anyways, thanks for your reply!

My pleasure Mikey. Congrats on keeping in shape......and your continued riding. Your Percheron Paint Cross sounds ......BIG !!  And I'm curious. What knid of competition do you want to compete in ? What knid of resourses do you need ? I would imagine that you said as much when you were featured on T.V.( and......THAT'S cool ! ) You're talking......regular competition.....as opposed to handicap riding competitions ? Again......just curious. Nice talking with you !

We have a great video on horseback riding:

    Therapeutic Horseback Riding
Hippotherapy uses a horse's walk to provide sensory input through movement which is variable, rhythmic and repetitive. The resultant movement responses in the client are similar to human movement patterns of the pelvis while walking.

Thanks Rob..........the video was great.....I watched that.....plus...the service dog one. I think it's important to mention the spiritual side of these animals.....with which we can and do connect . I don't think it's a coincidence that.....the mother in the horse video......mentioned the word spiritual in relation to the horse.........and the young lady mentioned that her horses name was ..." Spirit ". Anyone who has owned a dog........knows that they can and do have a sixth sense about some things........they can be the companion ( including...the horse )......with the capacity to connect on a very deep level. So..... the physical benifits from these animals are apparent.......the emotional and spiritual benifits.......maybe not as apparent......but most definitely........there ! Again.......thanks for the horseback riding link.

I know all about the benefits of riding horses, but I'm at the point to where I want to compete. I'm way past the level of an average rider even with my disability. I wish I could find someone to sponsor me for any type of equestrian event it would really make my dreams come true.

Hi Yes ! I did try horse therapy. I have MS and I can go with neural pain in a leg, but sure it doesn't hurt when I'm riding this Paso Fino Horse. Paso Fino horses are the best when the legs are no so strong and it requires less effort to make a nice ride. Also, I go when dizziness sets in , and it goes away at least when I'm riding. Even thought doctors say there could be a lot of bacterias on the stalls I don't care. Every time that I have energy I give the horse a shower and clean its hooves my health have improved since I go there once at week. just one word HAPPINESS!!!.
