Your search for other forms of therapy for your boyfriend is both timely and admirable, especially since most physicians believe that the amount of recovery begins to plateau after three years. It’s my experience that your boyfriend (through trial and error) will become his own best therapist. In the interim, patience and your commitment to finding the right therapy regiment is critical to your boyfriend’s physical and mental recovery.
For example, I spent the first six months following my accident four years ago (incomplete C3-C4) hospitalized in an acute rehab center. During my hospitalization, I received two hours a day of both PT and OT. And although I worked hard everyday and was mentally ready for recovery, my body needed more time to heal before I could fully benefit from the PT and OT therapy. So even after six months of hospitalization and caring therapy, I still needed 24/7 care-giving post discharge. Following my hospitalization, I tried acupuncture, Feldenkrais, warm pool therapy, and even a year at SCI-Fit in Pleasanton, CA. My therapy regiment today includes the use of a warm pool, weights, a standing frame (purchased on craigslist), massage table, Nustep, treadmill, and hand cycle. After nearly three years of my own therapy regiment, I now live alone with minimal part time help.
