How far (time frame) past initial injury is 'progress' possible?
    By Joleen
My initial injury was received in October of 2008.  Since that time I have been a paraplegic.  I have taught myself how to do the simple things I once took for granted over the past few years and for the most part just try to make the best of the functions that I still do have control over.  Now, after over three years I've been getting more frequent muscle spasms throughout my body and actually noticing them in my feet and legs more recently.  For the most part I would compare the feeling, or lack thereof, through my lower extremities as to being encased in concrete, I know they're there...  they refuse to respond to my wanting them to move on demand type of situation.  I'm curious if anyone else has went an amount of time with nothing at all and eventually did regain use?  With my initial injury all I could move was my right hand, and not very well coordinated at that... I know I've come a long way from that point but I still wonder if it's possible to really get further than I already have?   I have already went further than the physical therapists and occupational therapists I was referred to told me that I would... debating if I'm hanging on to false hope or if maybe just maybe it's possible to regain a bit more mobility even after so much time has passed since the initial injury.

Well I  am a 4/5 Complete/Quad and I continue to get return, through hours of rehab, diet, yoga and fun.  All you need to do is move and imagine.

Thank you for your response! I remain hopeful of gaining a bit more
mobility than I already have although I've had enough health professionals
tell me it won't happen I just can't give up. This October will be four
years out from my injury (occurred the first week of October 2008), I don't
want to hold false hope, at the same time I don't want to give up on any
    possibilities either.

I've been told not to expect anything, but a year after rehab I still get sensations that are new I hold on to hope, but try not to focus on it constantly any miracle cases out there I would love to hear them.

Hello Everyone: I was injured in 1986 T10/T11 Incomplete but at the time they didnt know alot and just told me that and were shocked when after a few weeks I could barely while straining move a toe just alittle. After a period of 2yrs I could feel my left leg better than the right and use the right one better than the left. So I was told in the beginning the spinal cord goes into shock and it can be 6 months to a year even 2 before it comes out of shock and you can even begin to know what return you will have. I was blessed to work with folks in rehab at spain in brimingham AL and Woodrow Wilson in VA. I worked with the forrest gump type braces ect. Now i can hop around some on crutches I regained bowel and blatter control pretty quick I would say I would say with in a month. The key is of course faith in God and not giving up, fight the good fight and remember no matter what God can use anyone imagine the folks you can help with your experiences.

C5, injured 1995. After 13 yrs I started activity based therapies and yoga and acupuncture. I am now off meds and have some bladder control. We have found muscle activity in my glutes and quads and back. Not much to be super functional...and maybe it was there all along and I just didnt know it but anyway it has been a lot of progress for me after so many years. and no meds is AWESOME!

mary jo  ,How old is your injury? What type of return do you have now and how long did it take for the comeback? I am a C3/C-4 complete and work out twice a week, but still don't have any function.

    Hello Again:

I forgot to mention at one time they were doing a study using amino acids with new injurys and they were saying those who used them got back on average more return than those who did not.

I'm a C4/5 and just passed the 12 year mark.  I few months ago I started being able to wiggle the toe next to my big toe on my right foot.  It's not much, but I was pretty excited about it.

Scott, what type of workout do you undertake twice each week and how long has it been since your injury?  I Am Also a C3/C4 Complete, 3 1/2 years post injury.  I have range of motion exercises everyday but have not gotten anything back.  I have mentally come to grips with that as a permanent outcome if that's the way things turn out, but it seems that the people handling my rehab at BIR in Dallas never made a connection between a serious workout and functional recovery in my case.  I guess I have always wondered whether or not a more aggressive approach to workout/rehab would have or can still make a difference.

I am just 11/2 post injury c4/c5 incomplete and have had a lot of return.  I use a power chair to "get around", but I can manage a lot of things in my daily life.  I would not have had this much recovnd massery had I not insisted on more aggressive therapy.  My hands would have permanently curled as would have my feet and lower legs had I let the therapists get away with minimal returns on me.  I am still regaining function and am starting new therapy next week on a very aggressive program.  My pain meds make it possible for me to handle this.  Also chiro and massage to help with the therapy help.  I can now stand and take a few tentative steps.  I actually drove my car a few days ago (to the chagrin of my friend!) but it was great!  My point is this, do NOT allow anyone to tell you what your limitations are.  Keep pushing.  I don't like to take pain medication any more than anyone else, but they help me push myself.  Eat as well as you can and fresh air!!!  Let me know what happens.

Joe G – I go to a facility called Buckeye Wellness Center in Cleveland, Ohio. It is exclusively designed for spinal cord injury fitness. It is based off of the model used at Project Walk, which concentrates on repetitive pattern recognition. After only a few months, I have been able to pick up my left foot and push my left leg out. I still have no feeling south of my biceps, but I'm hoping for some return in the future. it will be my three-year anniversary since my injury in july.

My late husband of 34 years was a c4/5 incomplete quadriplegic all that time.  He got back recovery for a long time.  What I think helped the most was I would roll him across a bed like a log every day.  I may sound weird; but rolling him kept his body loose and less spastic.  He took no medicines except homoeopathic ones.
He was examined by a rehabilitaion unit a few years ago; and they said he was in marvelous shape.  I really suggest having yourself rolled back and forth across a bed by your caretaker, frequently, even though it might seem strange.  I bet it will feel good.

I was injured in 1988..wow do I have the years on you. Just be thankful everyday that you are alive. the alternative is the  pits. Our physical body is not all that we are.  I was a professional water skier in the prime of my life. with a physical body in top shape.. this could never happen to me.  It did and I found out who my friends really were.  Very FEW. But I gained  so much empathy that I could never have gained being  full bodied. I think It was a gift to me. And I treasure what it has taught me. You f ind out who your real friends are really fast. Thank god, you never needed them any way. You found out your strength. You found our your humanity. You were given a GIFT.

I just had my "Tree Incident" last August, I'm still learning ways to do things with my limited abilities, sometimes I think my right hand might be a littlle better but then it stops working again. My handwriting is better but I mouse with my left and type with my left hand and right index finger...at least the other fingers stay out of the way now. I went for bone scan yesterday...hopefully they will deal with my bottom half now. My torso feels like it's in a very tight corset all the time and there's a point mid back that feels like it's being poked. The doctors have known this for months and said only that the compression fractures "have probably heeled themselves by now. Does that happen?

    Good morning!

I last posted to this feed on Feb 29.  I am happy to report to you that I have gotten more return.  My injury was Aug 14, 2010 and it was alsmost 1 1/2 years before I got any real progress.  Since then, it is almost every day that at least something happens, however small.  I can now walk short distances with crutches and am driving a couple of times a week.  My pain has lessened the more agressive I get with therapy.  My therapy runs out at the end of the month though.  Does anyone have any websites that I can go to to look at self therapy?  Anyway, all I can say is be agressive with yourself, I was told by my doctors that I would only gain about 50% return... I'm far beyond that now and am convinced I can get to 90%!
