How do you choose the right rehab center? What is a physiatrist? When will your rehabilitation begin?

Need assistance with locating a rehabilitation center
    By Mendy
My friend recently had a motocycle accident and now has been diagnosed as incomplete spinal injury with paralysis from waist down. His parents are at a loss as to what they should do when he is released from the hospital quite soon. Any advise on full service rehabilitaiton centers in the central Florida area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hello!  I haven't heard of any rehab hospitals in Florida, but I would suggest The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA.  They are the best in the Southern states, imho.  They taught me about every body process affected by my injury, & signs to watch for that may signal problems if you do not have any sensation.  I learned more in 6 weeks there than any other hospital or rehab I have been to since.

If that is not possible, I would recommend using the search tool on this web site to find a physiatrist who has experience in your injury level, then getting recommendations for facilities that have the specific therapies you require.  Good luck!

From my experience I would suggest going to the best rehab facility you can afford.  From everything I have read I would agree with the previous post -- the facility in Atlanta is one of the best.  The flow of information may seem overwhelming at 1st, don't let that concern you.  Just absorb as much as you can and be involved as much as you can and you will be fine.  Good luck in your journey!

Hi: I am sorry to hear about your friends injury but the Paralysis Resource Center offers a multitude of information and resources to help you sort through the maze of a new spinal cord injury.
I would suggest that your friends family starts with the Top 10 Questions for the Newly Injured found at the following link: http://www.christopherreeve.org/site/c.mtKZKgMWKwG/b.4514599/k.901E/Newly_Paralyzed.htm
Next I would suggest that his family call an Information Specialist at 800-539-7309 to receive information and suggestions on selecting a rehabilitation center. Information Specialists are available from 9-5 Monday thru Friday.  Besides having a person to guide you through the process, you will receive a wealth of printed materials to help you better understand a spinal cord injury.  To locate more information, please go to the home page of the Reeve Foundation Paralysis Resource Center at http://www.paralysis.org
I hope you and your friends family will reach out to the Information Specialist Team.
