Learning that you, a family member or friend has gotten a spinal cord injury is devastating and overwhelming news.

Finding a new way thru life
    By mark
Hi my name is mark and i'm a L1,L2  complete . I new to this site and enjoyed reading about everybodys stories about there lives. I fell from a tree on august the 20th of this year. I don't remember anything about the accident itself. The last thing I remember was kissing my girlfriend goodbye for work and then I was going to trim some trees or so I thought. The next thing I remember it was wednesday afternoon and thats when I started to relize what had happened. I guess the body and mind have a strange way to block out things when they are this bad. Sometimes I wonder if I will ever remember and sometimes I think its better that i don't. Anyway I spent the next month in the hospital and the next month after that at mount vernon rehab. I am home now and learning to adjust to my new life trying hard to keep my spirits up. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week and thats painful but I still look forward to it. I've always been a very active person and kind of a workaholic. Now that im home everyday i'm not to sure what to due with myself. I look at everyday as a new adventure and try as many new things as possible in a single day so work so don't but even when I could walk everything dosen't always work as planned but you just have to keep trying. Well I've taken up enough of everyones time for now but looking forward to meeting all of you someday. I hope everybody has a great christmas and a wonderful new year . Try to stay on the positive as much as possible it does make it a little easier.

Hi Mark.....my name is Norma.....I had a horse accident almost 30 years ago. I'm a SCI ( L3-4 incomplete )........can walk short distances with braces and canes........mostly get around in a wheelchair.......but have learned to live my life , just differently ! It sounds as though you are working things out as they come.........probably the only way to do it......and with a very positive attitude.....the only way to do it well, I think ! And things certainly don't work out always as we've planned......do they ? I think if you do kind of take things on as they come......figure things out along the way.......you're going to do just fine.......sounds like everything is still new to you.....kind of raw.....untested.....untried. Give yourself time.....and most of all.....be very, very kind to yourself. If you can.....try to treat yourself like you would a baby....a baby who has to learn new things evry single day. Have a party for yourself every time you conquer something new.........treat yourself gently when you don't get it the first time.....or even the seventeenth ! I think you get the picture........and just know.....you've got lots and lots of company.......there are plenty of us ! You're not alone........not by a long shot. Well.....as usual, I've gone on and on. I'll close by saying.......very nice to meet you. Let us know how you're doing......we're here........and we care !..........Warmest regards......Norma

mark, i'm a c6-7 incomplete.  you've got the right attitude about your new life.  things won't be the same, but that not necessarily a bad thing.  just take one day at a time.  i'll say a prayer for you.

Thanks everyone for your support I really appreciate it from everybody. Its great to know that everyone has each others back no pun intented. Today I meet another milestone in therapy . I was able to do my first push-up since my accident. It felt great and i'm really excited it just felt so good to be strong enough to push the out. It just lets me know that I'm getting stronger everyday and that soon enough theirs not going to be much to stop me. Thanks everyone I hope everybody has as good a day as me.
