Discrimination by General Motors towards Wheelchair Users
    By Paul
I ordered a 2010 GMC Savana Cargo Van and it arrived damaged with a dent and cosmetic paint problems and had to go into the shop for a week+ to be fixed. It came back from the repair shop with the lousiest shoddiest paint job you could imagine (the dealership cut corners to save $$$) and had to go back for a second time for another week of repairs. SO I had no vehicle for two + weeks. The vehicle came with a 3 year bumper to bumper warranty which includes a rental vehicle provided by Enterprise rent a car. GM Dealership would not give me a rental vehicle and used my disability as the reason stating that it would cost them too much. They never asked what I needed and all I would have needed is any sort of car with hand controls. I called Enterprise rent a car and they said they provided hand controls free of charge to customers and it doesn't charge gm extra for customers needing hand controls. I called the company many times over this and they just backed the dealership. I had to take GM to small claims court on a variety of other warranty issues in addition to their refusal to honor the car rental part of the warranty. I recently had a Better Business Bureau Autoline arbitration and the General Motors representative during the arbitration conference told me that GM would NOT honor the car rental part of the warranty and they would not provide me with a rental vehicle when my vehicle needs to go in for repairs under warranty and that  I would have to pay for a rental vehicle myself.
The local dealership also tried to blame my wheelchair on the repeatedly breaking cargo door pin. The vehicle came with the cargo door misaligned and rubbing on the side of the van and the door jam pin broke several times when I closed the door. The service guy didn't want to pay for the repair and tried to stick me with a $79 bill. He tried to say my wheelchair somehow did it but wouldn't explain how when I asked him to show me. He was just trying to stick me with a bill as my damn wheelchair doesn't get anywhere near this pin. My body is between the left side of the cargo door as I roll in my wheelchair into the van(I don't need a lift).
SO this is the sort of crap I have been dealing with and a whole lot more.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
What should I do about this? I already took them to BBB arbitration and they still refuse to honor the car rental portion of the warranty and they continue to use my disability as an excuse.
My vehicle has a recall defect for the life of the vehicle which is covered by warranty so my vehicle is going to have problems in the future and will need to go back into the shop for an extended period of time to have this recall defect fixed.. I can not afford to be without transportation and can't afford to pay for a rental vehicle which is supposed to be covered by warranty.
