we froze containers of water in our freezer--ie. empty gallons of milk, 2 ltr bottles of soda etc. When power goes out, use them to help keep the fridge cold.
    other tips:
    • kick up temp in fridge and freezer
    • have an ice chest ready
    • use ice chest for perishables
    • have a "go bag" for medical necessities such as caths, etc in the event you loose power, everything is in one place
    • use head flashlights---something I learned from boyscouts. LED laterns are a good option too
    • the temps in the mid-atlantic dropped a lot so I baked banana bread etc to warm up the house. Eventually turned up heat in event of power failure
    • we will have flooding tomorrow, eye of Sandy ran over our county--be deligent during the night
    • have a crank radio with flashlight, one way to get news
    • use one cell phone for back up, keep fully charged--no calls, txt in event of power failuer--our youngest lost that competition
    • have a list of all medications stored into phone and or on paper in event of emergency. List prescribing dr name and pharmacy
Lastly, be smart, stay inside, stay warm and dry.

Also make sure you know where the hand crank is if you have an electric bed.
