2011 Holiday Gift Guide for People Living with Paralysis
    By JLo
I know it is only the beginning of May but we here at the Reeve Foundation like to get a serious head start on our Holiday Gift Guide for People Living with Paralysis. Check out last year's here.

We find of course the best products to feature are those that are reccommended right from our community members. So that's where you come in!

We want to know about any and everything that you think should be featured on the Gift Guide. We are looking for items that are fun, unique, user-friendly, and something that will make living with paralysis easier.

To give you an idea, here are a few items I've come across recently:

1.The Easy Grip Jar & Bottle Opener and the Easy Open Medicine Packaging Pill Extractor. The products are just as the name sounds. For those with limited hand mobility, it makes it easy to pierce seals, open bottles and lids of all sizes, pop the top off prescription bottles and push and catch pills.

    2. LED clip-on light attachment which is perfect for clipping on your wheelchair or walker and lights up your path or your keyhole when opening your doors.

So think of some fun stuff you use on a daily basis that you think someone living with paralysis would love to unwrap during the holidays!

And possibly even better than suggesting gifts, how would you like to test them? That's right, we are looking for a handful of individuals living with paralysis to be official "Reeve Foundation Gift Guide testers!" We would provide you with the item/s and ask to use it a few times and let us know your thoughts. Love it, hate it, why? Interested? Reply back to this thread or email me at JLoBello@ChristopherReeve.org!

    Hi Janelle,

I am with a company called smartCRUTCH and we produce an assistive device that offers individuals with paralysis (walking) an alternative to your typical walker. We have worked with numerous walking quads and would love the opportunity to share our product.
We highly recommend that individuals consult with their rehabilitation specialist to see if our product is a fit.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely
    Tim Doyle

I would love to be a tester this year! I am a C5/6 female quad. I know my husband, who is my full time caregiver, is willing to test anything that might make his job easier too. I hope you'll give us the opportunity!

Hi, I'd love to help out! I also have friends here who can give their opinions on various products.

I highly recommend the adapted video game controls by broadened horizons. While I don't think I can personally make use of them, there are lots of people who could use these where they previously couldn't access video games.

I am a 42 year old woman who became paralyzed 7 years ago on a field trip. I fell 34 feet, and I am enjoying my second chance with life.

I would like to be a tester.

Plus, I would like to have someone contact me about a new idea I have for sliding boards. If this idea is already available, I would like to know where I can purchase one.

    Thanks,
    Tami

Hi Janelle- I'd love to be a tester also if you're still in need of some. I'm a T-12 incomplete.

Have an idea for helping brush your teeth and end up spitting all over your clothes because you can't bend forward far enough over the sink- a flexible cutting board! Works like a charm! Roll up to the sink- a pedastal sink works perfect for our chairs...then put the board under your chin, brush away! All the nasties flow down the board and into the sink, rinse your mouth, then rinse off the board and put away. Easy peasy...when we go camping I just use  a paper cup to spit into...otherwise I'd have soggy clothes all day..LOL.
Rubber shelf liner works good for opening jars. You can cut to the size you need.
Pool noodles work good to attach to garden tools to help grasp onto.
Dog leash works good for closing doors that open in when you go out.

You learn to become resourceful and creative when on a limited budget and insurance doesn't cover everything we need.

I have a mirror that can extend out or in, plus you can move the mirror up or down without moving the base. It is bolted to the side of my bedroom door frame, so I can see who is coming into my house or leaving. It could be even used next to the stove, so you can see into the pans that you are cooking with. Another idea for this mirror would even be in the laundry room, so you can see into your washer.

I would like to be a tester for the 2011 holiday gifts.

You can contact me at.... flyingangel_36@sbcglobal.net
