    Are you there yet?
    By paris 85
    Hello community,

    Are we there yet?

In my early days, I asked "Why" and I talked about getting to the Promised Land. A metaphor yes..  but, with much significance to me.

Dr Dan replied "it is not about getting to the Promised Land it is about the journey". True.. But, the Promised Land to me was about getting to a state of mind where living was more than just surviving.

Our journey, (my husband and me) is not much different than yours.
We are here together because we want to live despite paralysis. I mean really live,   and not just survive.

Well, for all of us here... it had a beginning...a fateful day when paralysis took over and changed everything.

I will like to share our present. Two years after that day. I'm the wife of a man living with paralysis. I am a mother to our daughter. I am a woman with hopes and aspirations for our future as husband and wife.

I asked WHY on my original blog in this community. It helped me to be where I am today. I no longer need the answer to WHY. We all know there is no answer.

Living the moment.......now that is an art.....Are we there yet?

Now I find myself cautious about tomorrow.

Do you dream of tomorrow or do you do as I do, live only for today? trying not to think about tomorrow?

I do miss dreaming about tomorrow...

How about you? Are you there yet and if so, how do you get there?

"It takes a village". Would you  care to share?
    .

    Paris 85,

I'm a 67-year-old man who is a C6 complete quadriplegic. I just had my 12 anniversary of my accident last week. I have a rich life doing many of the things that I did before I was injured. I hunt, kayak, ride bicycle, garden and many other activates. I believe we each control our outlook on life with our own attitude and commitment. There are many things I could tell you and your husband but the easiest way is for you to read some of my blog entries starting at the very beginning. http://handihelp.wordpress.com/.

Check out my forum on on the Reeve website called Learned Empowerment. I would encourage you to live each day to its fullest and don't be afraid to plan ahead.

the cornerstone on the Diaspora Museum in Israel says simply:

"To remember the past. To live in the present. To trust the future."

The following quote from a book I recently read describes, for me, how to best look forward to the future, by living completely in the present:

‎"But what I've always liked best is when he talks about having no memory. No memory of things he'd done just a second before. Good or bad. Because memory is time folding back on itself, to remember is to disengage from the present. In order to reach any kind of success in automobile racing, a driver must never remember. " Garth Stein, The Art of Racing in the Rain

Not so easy to do...however, a possible thought to consider.
