Hello Everyone - just found this group recently and I am so inspired by what I've read! I am a wife/caregiver of a quadriplegic. We are very blessed, as he has a full time job - but this can present it's own set of issues. I have to schedule shoulder surgery, which will render me unable to provide care for 4 - 8 weeks. It would also be nice to have someone in case I get sick or want to take a trip. Trying to find someone to fill in for me is proving very difficult. We have filled up a notebook page calling agencies. Some only take Medicare/Medicaid; some have minimum hours that make it unaffordable; some aren't taking new clients; some only provide services during working hours (which wouldn't work with his work schedule). It has been very frustrating, as this is just the most recent of so many things that seem to be set up to serve only non-working disabled clients. I am very proud of my husband, and hope his efforts pave the way for other disabled people to gain employment - by showing employers that all types of people can make valuable contributions to an organization! I guess that was a little venting - lol. But, my real question for everyone is: Have you had instance to hire someone to provide caregiving on a temporary basis? How did you find them? Any information - good, bad & ugly is much appreciated - thank you all!
