Kerry, my man is a c4/5 of 42 years sitting. He has a urethral cath...that gets changed at least every three weeks. This cath is a silicone type...translucent so I can see when it is gunking up. My man drinks heaps of water with citravesence(ural), tea, etc...but seldom alchohol.
He has been taking 2000mg gut friendly vitamin C since he had chemo for leukaemia a couple of years ago. He has had only one major uti in the past 14 years...but a nasty one. Pseudomonas...usually picked up in hospitals, can lurk around for years before hitting with a vengance. Needed a total of 13 days IV Gentomycin to clear it. Damn near killed him. Made him feel really really ill. No. One rule of infections...always try to identify the bug before treating...giving the wrong antibiotic will not help!! Your man's cath not draining is a worry...is he seated in his chair correctly so that he drains freely? Does he drain freely at night?? Does he suffer from AD?
My man has had 43 years to sort this stuff out...and we are still learning...but it is very important to realise that others have gone through all you are going through...you are not alone. Just ask...good luck!
