Hi Sharon and David,
When it is going a little better perhaps you might try a warm (not hot) just comfortbly warm, it might help. Then perhaps instead of ice, warm water bottles on the muscles that burn, and on the muscles in the back...several warm water bottles...if this improves David, then you might stay away from the ice, specially from the back muscles...

Here is something inexpensive to try: the homeopathic remedy Apis. It's major symptoms are burning, redness, can't bear to be touched, and better from ice application.
I once had a hornet sting that sounds exactly like what your husband is experiencing. The millisecond I took the ice off, the pain was so unbearable I couldn't stand it. But at the same time, I could not tolerate even the lightest touch. I took Apis, (tiny pellets you put under your tongue) and in 20 minutes the pain was gone. Apis can be found in a good heath food store or a pharmacy with a homeopathic section. I would get 200C as the potency if they have it, otherwise get 30C or even 30X. I don't know if it would work for such nerve pain, but for a few dollars, I would try it in a flash.

It's an adhesive patch that is/can be gently applied to the bottom of the foot.
When it was first applied to my feet; I was in so much pain, I couldn't really tell a difference in pain as it was being applied. Please conduct a google search on the product. It worked wonders for me.

Just to share that I have almost the same life. For me it seems to be the default pain for an incomplete thoracic spinal trauma. I try to swim but cannot go through the routine in time for the fixed schedule. I wear footbraces or night splints to stop drop foot and then all I have to do is not move! Anyway I sure hope it improves for you. I smoke marijuana-it helps.
