Then perhaps instead of ice, warm water bottles on the muscles that burn, and on the muscles in the back...several warm water bottles...if this improves David, then you might stay away from the ice, specially from the back muscles...

Please conduct a google search on the product. It worked wonders for me.

For me it seems to be the default pain for an incomplete thoracic spinal trauma. I try to swim but cannot go through the routine in time for the fixed schedule. I wear footbraces or night splints to stop drop foot and then all I have to do is not move! Anyway I sure hope it improves for you. I smoke marijuana-it helps.
