I had the privilege of working with him beginning in 1983, a year after his son Henry had been spinal cord injured in car accident. He was a tough task master and a remarkably good teacher. In the truest sense of the world "founder" Hank was ours - so much of what the spinal cord field is today grew out of his belief that if we funded the best science possible, there would be cures.

He was a force of nature, an outsized personality, smart, gentle and yet tough as nails - such an interesting man who left an indelible mark on our world.
"Rest well Hank ,,, we will complete what you started."
