Quality Living, Inc. (QLI), was 2012 Reeve Foundation Quality of Life grantee. They received a $14,406 grant to purchase a power wheelchair to add to their in-house fleet of chairs to be used by their clients. Along with grants from other foundations, QLI was able to add over 18 new chairs to their fleet. Here's a great update and photos from QLI about the how the grant greatly improved experiences for the spinal cord injury community.
In the spring of 2011, one of the individuals QLI was serving in our spinal cord injury program was a proud outdoorsman who feared that he would never be able to enjoy camping again due to his injury. To help this gentleman, QLI’s team of clinicians began discussing ideas to help ease his fear and make his dream a reality. We came up with a plan for the entire spinal cord injury group to have an overnight camping experience. The result for everyone involved was so positive that it has led to a tradition at QLI: an annual camping trip for the individuals in our spinal cord injury program.
The revitalized wheelchair fleet helped make this year’s trip, the 3rd annual QLI camping experience, the best yet! Just like prior years, the experience entailed sleeping in cabins, fishing, gathering around a bonfire, cooking dinner and breakfast over the fire, singing and playing the guitar by firelight until late into the night. This year, no one had any wheelchair issues – the new wheelchairs helped our clients feel even more safe and confident while independently navigating the campgrounds and pursuing experiences that fit their individual interests.
The QLI camping trip is an ordinary camping trip in many ways, and that’s what makes it so extraordinary. For almost everyone involved, it is the first night since their injury that they have not slept in a hospital bed or rehab facility.
From all of us at QLI, we would like to thank the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for supporting QLI. Your generosity will help ensure that we are able to continue to offer our clients a myriad of important opportunities like this camping trip, which promote our ultimate goal: the restoration of the highest quality of life possible for individuals with brain injury, spinal cord injury, or other severe physical disability. Again, thank you.
