Quality of Life Grants at work

It is always nice hearing from past Quality of Life Grants recipients. Recently, the Miracle League of Manasota in Sarasota, Florida received a $5,000 grant earlier this year in the first cycle of 2012. They emailed us some most fabulous photos and descriptions of the work they have done with the grant. Just seeing them makes me want to hop on a plane to Florida to see it in person!

The $5000 Quality of Life Grant was awarded to assist in the acquisition of permanent sunshades to cover the dugouts and bleachers. The sunshades and bleachers were successfully installed in September 2012, prior to the launch of the fall season. Returning families praised the addition of the sunshades referring to them as a blessing. Several of these families had made a donation to cover the costs of the shades. Fundraising is still underway for the completion of the remainder of the sports complex which will include: 1) an open air pavilion (rain shelter), 2) accessible restrooms, 3) water fountains and 4) concessions.

Four co-ed teams formed the initial spring 2012 league with two additional teams joining in the fall. Opening day saw hundreds of community supporters, families, local dignitaries plus Pirate and Oriole management and players. 20-30 volunteers are utilized at each game to serve as “Buddies” for each player. These volunteer buddies are recruited primarily from area high schools and colleges.
