“Keep the Lesson Alive”
by: Michael Thunell, Reeve Foundation 2011 Intern
Camp Baco and Camp Che-Na-Wah, for boys and girls respectively, are places where children can come together and enjoy themselves through many camp activities over the course of a summer. The event with the greatest impact on the kids and on the community however, is the annual Bazaar that they hold at the beginning of August. The Baco Che-Na-Wah Bazaar Foundation has been supporting the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation for several years.
The Bazaar is a wonderful opportunity to raise money for worthwhile charities, and according to Barbara Wortman, the co-director of the camp, "to instill in the campers the commitment and responsibility to help others." Along with the Administration, the senior campers organize the events of the day: the games, the booths, the raffles and the selling of merchandise. Many of the items and prizes are given as donations to the camp.
The money raised at the annual Bazaar goes to over 100 various charities, all of which are important and personal to the camp. The campers also give input about which charities they would like to receive funds. The Annual Bazaar is held during the camp's Alumni Weekend, so that those who loved Camps Baco and Che-Na-Wah years ago can come back and relive some of their fondest memories.
One former camper and counselor, Danny Heumann, was involved in a car accident when he was 18 years old and since then has been living a very full and active life with spinal cord injury. A husband, father and Reeve Foundation Board member, Danny is tireless in his advocacy and activism. The Daniel Heumann Young Scientist Fund (DHYSF) at the Reeve Foundation helps support the next generation of scientists who are working to develop cures for spinal cord injury.
The yearly donation to the Reeve Foundation through DHYSF is another way for the Camps to give back. By giving in the name of Danny every year, in the words of Barbara, “the Bazaar doesn’t keep the accident alive, but keeps the lesson alive.”
