The Reeve Foundation team is deeply saddened that our wonderful friend, Robert "Kink" Clawson, passed away this past Sunday, September 25th, 2011, on what would have been Christopher Reeve's 59th birthday.
Kink's devotion to our cause and community stemmed from his deeply close relationship with his grandson, Stan, who is a leader among leaders of individuals living with spinal cord injury. When we profiled Kink and Stan in our 2007 annual report, we highlighted their infectious smiles and shared passion for life.
The unshakeable bond between these two extraordinary men was only strengthened after Stan's climbing accident over 15 years ago. Kink and his beloved late wife Shirley never hesitated to offer their support not only to Stan but also to others facing challenges and to the collective mission to cure spinal cord injury and care for people living with paralysis. Kink's positive attitude turned challenges into triumphs, and his pride was evident as Stan has pursued his dreams and shared his talents -- from filmmaking to athletics to business to teaching. Kink's was a life well lived, and he will be dearly missed by many who came to know his kindness, humility, intelligence and generosity.
In the words of his grandson, "Kink, as you know, had a love for life. He was also an avid supporter of spinal cord injury research, treatment, advocacy and quality of life initiatives. He truly loved the work being done by the Reeve Foundation and remained optimistic regarding positive outcomes in spinal cord injury research."
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Clawson family and to Kink's many friends from Utah to southern California to around the globe. We will miss you, Kink, and we thank you for your unwavering support of our work, which continues with the spirit of your conviction and commitment.
