Celebrating Dana Reeve

Today, Dana Reeve would have been 50 years old. In a way, it's bittersweet. To think, spinal cord injury research and quality of life was no where near where it is today 50 years ago. Actually, where it is today is much more advanced than even where it was in 2004 when Dana became Chair of the Board of the Directors.

It is because of Dana that we have been able to make such strides. Christopher and Dana together were a force that was unmatchable.

I wrote previously on Christopher's birthday about his empty wheelchair and how I use that as a reminder every day when I walk through our offices. With Dana, I am reminded daily of the spirit she brought to the Foundation.

That spirit shows through in each and every word of her book Care Packages that she wrote in 1999. I love to read, so a few months after I began working here I figured it was only appropriate to read Christopher's books Still Me and Nothing is Impossible, and Dana's book Care Packages. While Christopher's books recount his life so openly, Dana's book is an expression of thanks to all of those who supported the Reeves after Christopher's injury and an expression of love to her husband.

Dana wrote in the introduction, "It is for the people who cried for us, cheered for us, sent positive energy our way -- people who never expected anything in return other than the recovery of their friend and hero: my husband, Christopher Reeve."

Dana celebrated hope, devotion, and the gentleness of mankind in Care Packages. On this day, we celebrate Dana. Her life, her legacy.

More on Dana.

Still Me, Nothing is Impossible, and Care Packages are all available in our Paralysis Resource Center Lending Library.
