Remembering Christopher six years later

This Sunday marks the sixth anniversary of Christopher Reeve's passing. I hear from a lot of people that they recall the exact moment they found out and where they were. Unlike just about anyone I talk to, I don't remember it.
I can't say the same now though. The picture at right is of Christopher's wheelchair that sits in the lobby of our office. Day in and day out I walk by this as a constant reminder of what it signifies. It's a pretty powerful reminder of a disability that affects 1 in 50 people in the United States that are living with paralysis. It's a reminder of how incredibly grateful I am for the life I have.
Both of Christopher's books, Still Me and Nothing Is Impossible, beg the simple idea that really, nothing is impossible after all. Two of my favorite quotations from the books say just that:
It is very tempting to give up, yet we have to find the will to keep going. But even when we discover what motivates us, we can’t do it alone.
Christopher's wheelchair is a reminder that it takes more than just one person to walk for those who can't. That one person can't do it alone.
When we have hope, we discover powers within ourselves we may have never known – the power to make sacrifices, to endure, to heal, and to love. Once we choose hope, everything is possible.
That wheelchair is a reminder of hope of yesterday, today, and all our tomorrows.
The end of life is not usually something people want to remember, but in this case, this Sunday will be a day to celebrate Christopher and Dana for the light that still shines in their memory. The light, the flame, the vision of their incredible drive, energy, and spirit of them is brighter than ever.
