Exercise does not always require vigorous movement. Yoga has many benefits for people of all different ability levels. Matthew Sanford, a gentleman with paraplegia, not only practices yoga, but also has started a center to instruct others with disabilities. Practicing yoga can have physical benefits such as improving your balance and flexibility, but also emotional improvements such as increasing your confidence and patience.
Yoga focuses on breathing, and connecting the body to the mind. It can be a modality to help control spasticity and manage pain. Sanford says “I really, really, really encourage people living with disability to listen to the body so that they can hear a different level of sensation, so they can experience freedom that comes from connecting to this subtle level of sensation. It’s not going to reverse the condition, but if you can listen to it and follow it, it’ll lead to a better life.”
Matthew’s center is Mind Body Solutions, and their clients report improved motor planning and transfers, fewer falls and decreased stress. Visit his website: mindbodysolutions.org
