Deanna, that is a good point but it brings up another pet peeve of mine. Why are wheelchairs built with a five-year lifespan in mind? With a good maintenance plan, could they not last longer? Not everyone spends 15+ hours a day in their chair. It would be interesting to see a study which looks at the breakeven cost in years of a good maintenance program, using the current standard of chair construction quality. If the average chair costs $30,000, could a good program of maintenance and extended warranties save Medicare money versus funding a replacement every 5 years? The problem is, wheelchair manufacturers have a vested interest in not looking at this kind of a study in Medicare is probably incompetent to do it. The current competitive bidding strategy being employed by Medicare for durable medical equipment certainly is not a move in this direction.
