I enjoy being an advocate for people with disabilities. I am not afraid to speak my mind. I have a voice and I like to use it. I take pride in being able to help others. Whether it is helping a newly injured patient, or just offering my email or phone number to someone who needs to talk.

That Went By Fast – So Long 2011

Here we are in 2012 and I am thinking, where on earth did 2011 go? The year went by so incredibly fast. It just seems like yesterday it was Halloween and now we are starting a new year.

2011 started out bad for me, with my broken femur, again. Then I was stuck in bed or the recliner for two months waiting for the swelling to go down. A year later it’s almost 100 percent healed. I’m on Forteo now and I hope that increases bone density and I don’t have any more breaks.

I got to cross of two things on my bucket list last year, and quite honestly they were both dreams come true for me. In April I got to see Chris Cornell (lead singer of Soundgarden, Audioslave) do a solo acoustic show in a small club in St. Paul. I have been a fan since I was in middle school so this was a long time coming and by far one of my favorite concerts ever.

Demarcus Ware and Victor ButlerIn August I got to meet the Dallas Cowboys when they played the Minnesota Vikings in a preseason game. The stars (pun intended) lined up for me that day from a nice fan who new Jerry Jones. The team allowed me to wait at the elevator until every last Cowboy was out of the locker room. I got to talk to and have my photo taken with some of my favorite players. To this day it was such a surreal experience and a memory I will cherish forever.

Baby Easton entered the world on January 5th of last year and we will be celebrating his 1st birthday this past weekend. We have big hopes that he’ll be a Dallas Cowboys linebacker someday. He’s a big boy and his parents are two of the biggest Cowboys fans I know and some of my dearest friends. I love Easton and Emma (his big sister) dearly and can’t wait to see them grow up.

The biggest news of this year is I landed a part time job with the Reeve Foundation as a regional coordinator for the Peer and Family Support Program. I am really enjoying the work. So far I have had nothing but positive responses from the organizations I have contacted; peer support is something that is not only needed, but such a positive asset to the recovery process. I can’t wait to start working with mentors and mentees when the time comes.

I decided to go on a diet and joined Weight Watchers. I am down about 19 pounds since I started getting weighed in October. Still a ways to go and am hopeful once the accessible gym opens here the weight will come off faster. One can hope.

I’m starting the new year off by redecorating my room. It’s time for a change in here and I am finding amazing deals online and off to decorate it and stay within my frugal little budget. It’s going to be WILD! I’ll post pictures and a blog when it is completed.

I am hopeful that 2012 Mr. Right decides to pop in and say hello to me somewhere. We don’t even need to talk about the boys (they don’t get to be called men -- that’s earned) of 2011. Not even worth writing about it, that’s how bad they were.

Last, but not least my health has been amazing. My Lupus has been in remission for eight years. It is rare that it has been undetectable for so long, but I am overjoyed that it is staying away. I am on one medication for Lupus and love not being sick. I like this side of the coin a lot better!!

I hope your 2011 was great and I hope all of us have a great 2012 filled with love, happiness, health, and good fortune. I don’t buy that the world is going to end this year, but just in case it does, don’t forget to live it up and have fun every day. Enjoy your year everyone!
